Debra Hoover was born and raised in the small Ohio city of Bucyrus. A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bucyrus, she grew up with the dolls and knew most of the doll-makers of the modern era. Like so many little girls in the area during the 1950's and 60's, she had a Presbyterian Doll. What made it special was that hers was painted and given to her by her grandmother, Florence Watts in 1957.
Years later it was destroyed by her dog, so when she began to search for another of her grandmother's dolls in 2007, she had no idea that she was about to uncover a fascinating story. Almost forgotten, it was the story of the very enterprising women of the Presbyterian Doll Society of Bucyrus. This book tells their story.
For years, collectors have tried to standardize the Presbyterian Doll. This book is full of color photos of the dolls from 1885 to when the doll-making ended in 1984. It includes the stories of the doll-makers and their dedication to making something that would last for more than a century.
